As of 1 July 2025, Dr Niels Rietveld has been appointed as Professor of Economics & Genetics at Erasmus School of Economics. The promotion recognises his outstanding contributions to research, teaching, and leadership within the academic community.
Since joining Erasmus School of Economics in 2010 as a PhD candidate, Niels Rietveld has made significant strides in economic and interdisciplinary research, publishing extensively in top-tier journals, including Science, Nature, and The Review of Economic Studies. His pioneering work bridges economics and genetics, with a focus on understanding how genes, environments, and policies interact in shaping socio-economic inequalities. His scholarly excellence has earned him prestigious grants, including a NWO Veni Grant (2015), an ERC Starting Grant (2020), a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action – Doctoral Network consortium grant in the Horizon Europe programme (2022) and a NWO Vidi Grant (2024).
In addition to his research, Niels Rietveld has demonstrated a strong commitment to teaching. He developed and taught the innovative Economics & Genetics bachelor course, which attracts a large number of students annually. His dedication to student mentoring is evident in his successful supervision of PhD candidates, with graduates securing esteemed academic placements.
Niels Rietveld plays a key role in shaping doctoral education at Erasmus School of Economics, serving as Director of Doctoral ´óÏó´«Ã½ since 2023. His leadership and collegial approach have been praised by colleagues, highlighting his contributions to the broader academic environment at the Erasmus School of Economics.
